The Use of Pre-Filters for Clean Rooms

Various types of filters are manufactured, with different filtering efficiencies that are used for air treatment. Within this wide variety of filters, we can highlight those that are mainly used with the objective of preserving and increasing the durability of other filters, normally of greater efficiency and consequently of greater cost. Understand…

What are Pre-Filters? How do they work and what are they for?

Pre-filters are air filters (generally Coarse) used before other filters (generally fine or HEPA) as a way of retaining solid particulates that are present in the air, thus maximizing the efficiency of the air filtration system.

The initial pre-filters perform the first filtration, retaining the largest particulates, thus protecting the next stage of filters in the filtration system, improving its performance and durability.

Another important role of pre-filtration is its use as an optimization strategy in the filtering process and prolonging the useful life of other filters, as they will receive a lower particulate load, which will result in greater durability and greater particulate retention capacity as well. .

The sequence and choice of filters for use as pre-filters will depend a lot on the application for which the air treatment is intended, as well as the segment for which it is serving.

Coarse filters are normally used as Pre-filters for fine filters and fine filters as Pre-filters for HEPA absolute filters. But there are specific applications, where there may be more filters used than those mentioned.

What are the most used filters as Pre-filters?

Any filter can be used as a pre-filter, this will depend a lot on the application for which the filter is intended. But there are some more “common” applications, for example, in the case of an HVAC system, among other common situations, which end up establishing a “standard” of filters most used as Pre-Filters in filtration processes, and these are usually the coarse filters G3, G4, M5 and M6.

The use of Prefilters in Critical Environments

In critical environments such as clean rooms, the use of pre-filters is also very important. In some of these processes, even more than one pre-filter is used to guarantee excellence in filtration.

In these environments, the Pre-filter retains the coarse particles coming from the external air intake for renewal and pressurization and the return of air from the clean room, the fine filters retain all types of particulates while the absolute HEPA captures the microparticles. Using the fine and coarse filter as a Pre-filter increases the lifetime of the absolute HEPA filter. Filters in critical environments can be installed in HVAC Systems equipment, in ducts in special filter boxes and also in terminal filter boxes.
