Air Treatment Unit, understand what it is…
UTA, or Air Treatment Unit, is an equipment that performs the treatment and recirculation of air in some places.
Air handling units ( AHUs) are generally part of an HVAC system: Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning , but they can also be used outside of these systems, in which case they only provide filtration and ventilation for locations that do not require air treatment (such as factory warehouses).
With a structure made of galvanized or stainless steel and aluminum, air handling units (AHUs) are typically modular equipment that allows for variations in their assembly and size. Inside the AHUs are their functional components.

How they work
The AHU's perform air recirculation. They remove the air from the environments and carry out the filtering and (or) treatment of it through their system and filters, and then deposit it again (successfully following this recirculation mechanism).
In addition to removing air from the place to be treated, according to the needs of the environment, a small portion of air can be captured from an external environment, thus creating positive pressure in the room or place of application.
The Air Treatment Units can also control variables related to temperature and relative humidity, in addition to promoting renewal and cleaning.
We can say that UTAS are air conditioning units, suppliers of clean air.
where they are used
Air Handling Units are widely used in:
- Hospitals
- shoppings
- Airports
- Hospital Sector
- Industries: Pharmaceuticals, Food, Automation, Electronics, Chemicals, among others…
They help these places by promoting temperature and humidity control. As well as helping to maintain air quality in environments where products are handled.
As well as they are also used for clean air application in HVAC Systems, Clean Rooms and Central Ventilation.

Elements of UTA
All the elements contained within its structure are fundamental for the air treatment to occur, let's see some of the main components:
Fan:
Used to move air. However, the Treatment Units may contain one or more fans inside, this may vary according to the project and size of the AHU used. There are still some variations in the use of fans within this system, which can be installed at the AHU outlet or in the insufflation process.
Cooling and Heating Elements:
Some elements are used that allow the control of the air temperature. Steam or electrical resistance is used for heating and chilled water or direct expansion for cooling (refrigeration). The method adopted will depend mainly on the need for the application.
Filter Elements:
The use of filters and pre-filters in air handling units (AHUs) ensures air free of impurities. Coarse filters are installed at the air intake to protect the entire system from potential contaminants. These filters remove larger particles, preventing them from contaminating the entire system. Furthermore, pre-filtering extends the lifespan of fine and absolute filters.
HEPA Fine and Absolute Filters are used after the fan, promoting higher air quality for use in cleanrooms, for example, where a high degree of purity of this element is essential to prevent contamination in the area.
Changing Filters:
If saturated, air filters can compromise the effectiveness of the entire system, even causing contamination. Therefore, continuous monitoring is necessary to ensure that air filters are replaced within the correct timeframe.
Noise attenuators:
Some AHUs may make noises due to their fan system(s). To prevent the propagation of these sounds, attenuators are used.
Some functions that the Air Handling Unit provides:
- Air Filtration
- Air Heating
- Air Conditioning
- Humidification and dehumidification of ambient air
